Our HOPE
Over the past year, Chimo and Chef Brian have transformed Tails Up into a dedicated Food Processing and Fish Cutting Center, focused exclusively on providing high-quality, nutritious food to Maui’s food-insecure communities. Through partnerships with the Hawaii Community Foundation, Upcountry Strong, and many other local organizations, they have built a resilient support network for families, kūpuna, and keiki across the island. With nearly 1 in 5 Maui residents facing food insecurity—including a significant number of elderly and children—the need has been more urgent than ever. This shift in Tails Up’s mission has been critical in sustaining these vulnerable populations, especially as Maui’s fishing community lost 70% of its business after the devastating Front Street fires. Through these combined efforts, Fresh Help Maui and Tails Up have created a lifeline, not only feeding those in need but also helping rebuild
livelihoods within our local fishing industry.
Our hope is to continue building a resilient support system for Maui’s food-insecure families and local fishers. We are committed to sustaining a circular economy that reinvests in the island, ensuring resources are shared with those who need them most and that our fishers are valued and empowered. Through ongoing education and mentorship, we aim to grow Maui’s fishing community, fostering the next generation of fishers who will uphold these traditions and help
keep our island self-sustaining. Together, we can nourish our community, strengthen local industries, and honor the culture and resources that make Maui unique.
